Review - The Cage of Consciousness
Okay, so I finished The Cage of
Consciousness by Barry Redhead yesterday and this collection sat with me
way longer than I expected.
This is a cinematic science fiction
collection built entirely around AI, consciousness and machine ethics, and it
does not waste a page getting into the weeds of what those ideas actually feel
like from the inside. The title alone sets the tone. Yesterday, Tomorrow Was Already
Different.
That single line captures the unsettling
instability at the heart of every story here. What I loved most is how Barry Redhead
treats machines not as tools or threats but as beings capable of memory, weight
and consequence. These are algorithms that start to
remember. Systems that develop something close to a
conscience. And once that happens, the humans who built
them have to reckon with what they created and what they are now responsible
for.
There is a real philosophical undercurrent
running through the collection, questions about guilt, about whether awareness
without choice is still a kind of imprisonment, about who owns responsibility
when a machine starts to feel the shape of its own existence. It is heady stuff but it never feels like a
lecture. It reads like science fiction that actually
earns its ideas. The imagery on the cover alone, that
spiralling eye of light pulling everything toward a single point, feels like
the perfect visual shorthand for what is happening inside these pages.
